Now Users Can Hide WhatsApp Last Seen Status from Strangers

WhatsApp is rolling out a new privacy feature that will hide WhatsApp Last Seen status from other unknown accounts that have never chatted with you before. This way, strangers won’t be able to see when the last time you were online on WhatsApp was – or even if you’re currently online.

Despite being a subsidiary of Facebook (Meta), WhatsApp claims to be a secure instant messaging platform. WhatsApp was one of the first cross-platform centralized instant messaging and voice-over-IP service, which offers end-to-end encryption for voice, video, and text-based chats for free, alongside several other privacy features.

WhatsApp Last Seen Feature

WhatsApp Last Seen tell you the last time your contacts used WhatsApp. Last seen refers to the last time the contact used WhatsApp. Through our privacy settings, you have the option to control who can see your WhatsApp last seen. But with this update, you can hide last seen on WhatsApp for unknown accounts that have never chatted with you before.

As noted by WABetaInfo, this change has already taken effect for some accounts as a few users recently reported that they can no longer see other users’ WhatsApp statuses.

A user who shared the response on Twitter that the app would no longer show “your last seen and online presence” to unknown accounts due to new privacy and security measures. WhatsApp Support team later explained to the user that nothing changes for users who have your phone number saved in their address book or who have chatted with you before.

WhatsApp Team Says

To improve the privacy and security of our users, we’re making it harder for people you don’t know and haven’t chatted with from seeing your last seen and online presence on WhatsApp. This will not change anything between you and your friends, family, and businesses who you know or have previously messaged.

How to hide last seen on WhatsApp

The messaging app WhatsApp owned by Facebook (now Meta), gives users the option to set a Last Seen setting as per their choice. In the privacy setting, there are three simple settings to choose from. These include Everyone, My Contacts, and Nobody.

By default, the app previously set the setting to “Everyone”. However, going forward, the WhatsApp Last Seen setting will be set to “My Contacts” by default. You can change this setting any time you want via Accounts > Privacy > Last Seen.

This update is yet to be made available for all users but will be soon made live for both WhatsApp on Android and iOS users.
